The Men’s Rights Space:
Fringe voices are being heard in the Men Rights Space only since the end of the last century. Any such voice emanating for men’s rights is largely ignored off. If after facing good amount of resistance and difficulties even such voices survive past the ignorance phase, these voices are tried to be suppressed with ridicule, scorn and contempt. The men’s rights enthusiasts are usually subdued by a distinct pattern of social & systemic ostracization. There are very few who survive this stage and stand tall to take up the cudgels.
The entry of activists in Indian Men’s Rights space occurred relatively later than few other countries in the world. Close to the end of the twentieth century few concerned males in India eventually organized themselves to fight a common cause, the misuse of the dowry law in India. The voices against the section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) started to gradually gain strength and over a period of three decades (running 1990 onwards) have formed themselves into various outfits still fighting the cause which the Supreme Court of India itself termed as #LegalTerrorism (Sushil Kumar Sharma vs Union of India).
The fight for the misuse of IPC 498A was still coming out of its infancy when in 2005 the Indian Parliament passed the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, which further added to the worries of the Indian men.
